Durban Mayor condemns murder by Metro officer

Mayor Kaunda has condemned the alleged killing of a woman by a member of Durban Metro Police.

ETHEKWINI Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has condemned the gruesome murder of 29-year-old Zinhle Muthwa by a Durban Metro Police officer.

It is alleged that the 30-year-old constable from the Durban Metro Police Multi Operational Response Team, used his service pistol to commit the murder.

It is alleged that he and Muthwa had been involved in a romantic relationship, however the motive of the murder is not known at this stage, and is pending police investigation.

The officer was arrested and appeared at uMbumbulu Magistrate Court yesterday. He will remain in custody until 13 January where he is expected to apply for bail.

“We strongly condemn gender based violence and it is sad that Ms Muthwa was allegedly killed by someone who was meant to uphold the law.”

“We call on Durban Metro Police members not to use service pistols to deal with anger issues. We also call upon the police to conduct a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of this matter. Institutions that are responsible for dispensing justice must also send a clear message that crimes of this nature are not acceptable in our society,” said Kuanda.

Mayor Kaunda sent his heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased.
