Tag donation makes a difference

Maris Stella in Essenwood recently handed over its annual collection of bread tags and bottle tops to QASA.

TRY to imagine how many loaves of bread, sealed with a tag, are sold every hour countrywide. Thanks to the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs project, there aren’t as many tags or tops landing on our beaches or going into landfill sites anymore.

Maris Stella in Essenwood recently handed over its annual collection of bread tags and bottle tops to Sue Martin, a representative of the QASA. Maris Stella have a running total of 74kgs of tags and 195kg of bottle tops. It takes 200kg tags or 450kgs bottle tops to bring in enough money to buy one wheelchair (around R2 000).

“We are constantly being reminded how harmful plastic is, if not recycled. By collecting bread tags and tops, even broken ones, it makes a difference to our environment as they are recycled into seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers and other useful items,” said Sue.

Tops that are accepted are cold drinks bottle tops, long-life and fresh milk bottle tops, stay soft bottle tops, bottled water tops, cooking oil tops and mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce or tomato sauce type bottle tops. The tops that don’t meet their requirements are typically tops lined with cardboard or the very flimsy ones like the coffee cup lids or lids in general. Additionally, pill cannisters, tops of Powerade or Energade or insect repellent (Doom) aren’t accepted.

“They say we make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give. As we gear ourselves up for the festive season, what better time is there to give than now? Quadriplegic Association of South Africa (QASA), together with Bread Tags for Wheelchairs wish to thank all for their continual support, it honestly changes lives!” she said.
