Local finalists announced in eco competition

Finalists have been announced in CLiP’s STOMP Awards.

FINALISTS in the Commonwealth Litter Programme (CLIP) STOMP Awards have been announced.

The STOMP (Stamp Out Marine Plastic Pollution) Awards made a call in October for South Africans to enter ideas and solutions that could reduce, or eliminate plastic pollution, which ultimately ends up in the ocean destroying habitats, and endangering marine species.

Over 60 entries in five categories were submitted and local finalists include The SuperScientists Project by CodeMakers NPO, submitted by Justin Yarrow from Berea, in the category Adult Inspire through Creativity, and Eden College’s environmental educational show Norman Klutsky: Eco-Warrior of the High Seas – submitted by Jean Van Elden from Eden College – in the category Youth Inspire through Creativity.

Commenting on his project, Justin said: “The project is profiling scientists as superheroes to speak the language of kids and inspire them to know more about science and pursue science and tech careers. We are in the process of launching a group of marine scientists. The first is from the Oceanographic Research Institute part of the SAAMBR at uShaka. The scientists are drawn as superheroes, with superhero names and then we profile their work through rich media including augmented reality.”

Jean said: “Our drama department staged the show which dealt with solutions that responsible citizens can implement in cleaning the oceans of plastic trash. The show was performed by 13 primary school children in Durban, Cape Town, The Hilton and Jongozi Arts Festivals and as part of International Marine Week at schools in Mauritius. It was also staged at a corporate event that challenged corporates, tertiary institutions and schools to get involved with the Moving Mountains Recycling project. This involves the installation of state of the art recycling villages at schools that will be student driven and managed by disabled adults. This project is a small component of the large eco programme that runs on a daily basis at Eden.”

Some of the finalists will be in attendance to present their entries at the CLIP Innovation Conference STEM the tide of plastic waste in Africa in Cape Town this week. The Conference, which will be attended by scientists, environmentalists, conservationists, and policy-makers, is co-hosted with the Sustainable Seas Trust, will be looking at STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) solutions to the marine litter problem in South Africa.
