THE Department of Human Settlements in KZN, through the KZN Rental Housing Tribunal offers landlords and tenants advice on how to deal with disputes regarding rented properties and how to protect individual rights against unfair practices.
The KZN Rental Housing Tribunal was established to resolve disputes between tenants and landlords in residential dwellings such as flats, apartments, backyard rooms, houses, shacks or huts, caused by an unfair practice.
If you need advice regarding any of the following, you are welcome to contact their offices.
• Your rights and obligations as Tenants or Landlord
• Advice with regards to lease agreements
• Do you experience any of the following at your rental property? lack of maintenance, illegal lockout, intimidation, non-payment of rental, non-refund of deposits, failure to issue receipts, disconnection of services, nuisance, damage to property, overcrowding, etc.

Complainants can lodge complaints with the Rental Housing Tribunal through the municipal office to resolve disputes. The tribunal undertakes to resolve disputes speedily and cautions complainants not to take the law into their own hands, but to exercise their rights in a legally accepted manner.
