Twist in Durban beachfront murder case

The bodies of the man and woman were discovered on the sand dunes near Suncoast Casino last week.

PROVINCIAL SAPS has confirmed there has been a change in charges related to the investigation into the apparent double murder of two Chatsworth residents on the Durban beachfront on Monday last week.

The bodies of Fathima Muhammad and Kresen Chandiah were discovered by a plastic and cardboard seller on the dunes near Suncoast Casino.

Brigadier Jay Naicker from provincial SAPS said at around 4pm police received the report of the double murder and proceeded to the scene, where they found the bodies with stab wounds. Charges of murder were opened for investigation.

However, following investigations based on the evidence gathered at the scene and post-mortem results, it has been reported that a possible murder-suicide is being investigated.

Commenting on the case on Monday, Brigadier Naicker stated: “The matter has now been changed to an inquest case and a murder case after a team of detectives gathered all the evidence as well as the results of the post-mortem.”

Following the incident, Durban Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, said one of the issues the municipality has prioritised was to increase police visibility and the installation of CCTV cameras in tourist attraction areas to enable the police to identify wanted suspects and people who plan and commit crime in these areas.
