Sardines make a surprise appearance

Greg Thompson said the influx of sardines in Durban was proving once again how unpredictable they are.

THE appearance of sardines on the Durban beachfront last week has been something out of the ordinary, says Greg Thompson, Acting Head of Operations at the KZN Sharks Board.

There was a hive of activity at the beachfront on Saturday, where fishermen were seen netting crates of these little fish.

Thompson said he had heard 60 crates of sardines were netted on the Durban beachfront on Saturday, 100 crates were netted on Sunday, as well as some on Monday morning which had not yet been confirmed.

“They did net sardines in Durban twice last month, which was seen as being very late in the season. Now three nets towards the end of November is definitely out of the ordinary. I am sure the experts are in full debate. The questions would probably be whether these late sardines are still moving north or whether they are return sardines, then there are some experts who are convinced that these are local sardines which have moved inshore from the deep,” he said.

Thompson said this influx of sardines was proving once again how unpredictable they are.
