Durban collapsed building locked down

The collapsed levels are believed to have been constructed from corrugated sheeting.

THE building on Dr Pixley kaSeme Street that collapsed yesterday injuring nine people, has been locked down by eThekwini Municipality.

In a media statement on Friday morning, 8 November, the municipality said the building’s owner had previously been served a contravention notice by the Health Unit as it had been identified as a health hazard.

The owner will not be served with a new contravention notice which requires him to have an engineer carry out the remedial work to fix the building. Once the work is complete, the city will review whether to open the building again.

On Thursday, rescue personnel and the city’s Fire Department responded to the scene following reports that a building had collapsed.

Responders found the ceiling and floor of the upper level, as well as the ceiling of the first floor, had collapsed onto the salon below. The collapsed levels are believed to have been constructed from corrugated sheeting.

Nine people sustained minor injuries and eight were transported to hospital.

A search was conducted to ensure there was no one trapped in the rubble. An engineer and inspector from the City were on scene.
