Crime reporting goes digital

The MySAPS App is now available on Android and iOS and is free to download.

A NEW App aimed at streamlining crime reporting was officially launched by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Umlazi, South of Durban, last week, during the launch of the 2019/2020 Safer Festive Season Operations.

A first of its kind on the continent, the MySaps mobile App, which is now available on Android and iOS as a free download, was designed to provide South Africans with a new and easy way to access policing services and information.

The App is an initiative developed through Crime Stop, and was developed so that communities can report crimes anonymously. The new app will allow citizens to interact with law enforcement officials more effectively, and users will be able to take videos or pictures of crimes and send these to Crime Stop. The tip-off will then be sent to the relevant province and police station to follow up. The person that reports the crime will get a reference number to add more information regarding the crime or to follow up on the police’s progress.

My SAPS can also be used to report corrupt police officers, with information being forwarded to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.

Along with being able to submit tip-offs, users of the MySAPS App will also have the ability to locate the nearest police station or vulnerable services facilities, and the ability to send emergency messages in case of danger.

The MySAPS App is available for smartphones from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in South Africa.

Feature phones users can also use the USSD string *134*10111# to access the SAPS Crime Tip Off line.

Coupled with this launch was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the SAPS and the Department of Tourism ahead of the busy festive season.
