New lottery serves animal welfare in SA

The Animal Jackpot has been launched to raise funds for animal welfare.

ANIMAL welfare organisations across South Africa can now raise funds for themselves through the Animal Jackpot – a registered lottery specifically designed to raise funds for animal welfare.

Since the National Lottery took the decision to to cease funding animal welfare, affected organisations have struggled to raise funds.

As a result, a group of animal welfare organisations, spear-headed by Durban-based Cats of Durban, decided to register an animal lottery. This lottery will be officially launched at the end of October, but is currently in a recruiting phase.

“As animal welfare organisations, we need to stand together. The withdrawal of lottery funding left many organisations high and dry, and facing closure,” said lottery founder Niki Moore.

She said while organisations accept that people and social issues should perhaps enjoy preferential funding, animals are also part of people’s lives.

“Poor people also own animals, and they are the ones that rely most heavily on animal welfare organisations for the care and treatment of those animals. Whether it is a working animal, or for security, or simply for companionship, animals form a huge part of our lives. And as the economy worsens, people find themselves distraught at the fact that they cannot afford treatment or care for their animals. This has placed a huge burden on welfare organisations – they cannot bear to see the animals being neglected, yet at the same time as their donor base shrinks the demand for their services increases,” said Moore.

The Animal Jackpot is calling on animal welfare organisations to join as beneficiaries, as well as corporate partners, sponsors and well-wishers.

The Jackpot can be entered online, or by approaching a participating animal welfare organisation. The website is https://catsofdurban.wixsite.com/animaljackpot, the e-mail address is animaljackpot@gmail.com, and the contact number is 071 932 8925. “We are still small but we know that this can be a game-changer for animal welfare. We have done all the logistical work behind this lotttery, so that animal welfare across the country can benefit. And we know that a lot of people would like to buy a lottery ticket that benefits animals – here is their chance,” said Moore.
