Armed robbers target businesses

Gangs of armed men robbed two businesses in Durban at the weekend.

ARMED robbers targeted several businesses where they held up staff and fled with cash, computers and other valuables at the weekend.

Blue Security’s Andreas Mathios said a gang of armed robbers, driving a white Toyota Corolla with no registration plates, arrived at a business premises in Overport where they held up a security guard at around 3.24am on Saturday.

“Five suspects who were wearing caps, got out the vehicle and approached the security guard on the premises. They robbed him of his panic button and cellphone before instructing him to lie face down on the ground,” Mathios said.

He said the gang then used a bolt cutter and a crow bar to cut the locks and forced their way into the building. The suspects fled with six computers. No injuries were reported. Mayville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

In a second incident, a gang of armed robbers, two of them armed with knives and one with a firearm, posed as customers and held up staff at a business premises in the CBD at 10.24am on Saturday.

“One of the suspects produced a firearm and held up the cashier, demanding cash, while the other two suspects prevented the other staff on the premises from stepping forward. The suspects fled with R2 500 in cash and keys,” Mathios said.
