Golf day supports the community

This year the Andrew Mentis golf day will be held on 1 November at the Royal Durban Golf Club.

THE Nomads Golf Club in South Africa hosts an Andrew Mentis Golf day, which is the culmination of the year’s fundraising campaign to benefit needy organisations.

The selected beneficiaries are not paid directly for their project, but the supplier of equipment or contractors, for work completed. The 2018 beneficiary of the golf day was Vukukhanye Educare Centre, a non-profit organisation formed in 2001, concerned with the care and support of orphans and vulnerable children, based in Chesterville.

More than R75 000 was raised went towards the construction of a new undercover area at the pre-school. A section of astroturf was laid with an awning and a covered sandpit, as well as security gates and burglar bars in the classrooms. This grass area can be used as an undercover area for outdoor teaching and lunch breaks, and offers protection from the midday sun and rain.

The Nomads Golf Club was formed over 50 years ago with a view of enjoying golf and camaraderie, but also for the furtherance of golf in South Africa. Nomads also sponsor SA junior golf. Many golfing stars such as Gary Player, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuisen and Brendan Grace, have been and are still involved in the club’s various programmes.

Nomads also sponsor the SA Paraplegic Golfers Association and promote up-and-coming previously disadvantaged young golfers. The club actively participates in the Golfarama program, where the scoring for the PGA Tour throughout South Africa and the Sun City Nedbank tour is captured. The members give of their time for free but earn payments for the Nomads club of South Africa.

The earnings are ploughed back into the furtherance of golf in South Africa. Nomads clubs have now been established in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, recently in Zambia, Australia, New Zealand and now in England. All have the same objective of the furtherance of golf and to assist the less fortunate.

This year the Andrew Mentis golf day will be held on 1 November at the Royal Durban Golf Club. The day is always a popular event, and well attended. If anyone is interested in attending this year, visit: www.natalnomads.co.za.
