Taxi driver opens false theft case

After reporting a case of theft of motor vehicle, the driver was charged for perjury and detained at Berea SAPS.

BEREA SAPS has warned the community not to open false cases following an incident last week.

According to Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS, on 25 September at around 8am, officers received a complaint of a suspicious motor vehicle at the intersection of Heswal and Ritson Roads in Berea.

“Warrant officer Sokhulu and Constable Marx arrived at the motor vehicle and noticed a security guard employed by DUT near the vehicle. They questioned the guard as to who had parked the vehicle there and he informed them of an accident which happened at about 5am. The driver left after the guard had assisted him to push the vehicle to the side of the road,” said Naidoo.

He said the police officers did a vehicle check with radio control and obtained ownership details. The owner was contacted and he informed the officers that his vehicle operated as taxi and his driver had informed him that the vehicle had been stolen.

“The owner then sent his driver to the scene where the vehicle was found. The driver opened a case of theft of motor vehicle with the officers on the scene, however the security guard from DUT noticed the driver and informed the police that it was the same person who had been involved in the accident,” he said.

After reporting a case of theft of motor vehicle, the driver was charged for perjury and detained at Berea SAPS.

“Reporting of false cases is a serious matter and anyone who is caught doing this will be charged and dealt with accordingly,” said Naidoo.
