Teens remanded in custody following fatal shooting of Durban pupil

The boys were arrested by police officers from Berea SAPS on 12 September after they allegedly shot and killed their schoolmate.

FOUR boys aged between 13 and 16 who were arrested by Berea SAPS police officers after they allegedly fatally shot their schoolmate, Moyeni Walters, appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, 16 September and were remanded in custody until their bail application.

According to Capt Nqobile Gwala from provincial SAPS, the boys were arrested on 12 September.

“It is alleged that Moyeni had, on the day before the shooting, been involved in a fight in school with one of the accused. On the following day, while he was walking home along Warwick Avenue, he was shot in the abdomen. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injury. The firearm used in the crime was not found in the possession of the accused and they claimed that an unknown man who was driving a taxi spotted them fleeing the scene with the firearm and took it,” said Gwala, adding that the licenced firearm belonged to the late step-father of one of the accused.

“Berea detectives followed up information and their investigations led them to Ndwedwe where the pistol and ammunition was found hidden in the roof of a home. A 26-year-old suspect was arrested for defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm,” said Gwala.
