Glenwood care centre open to the public

Services offered at the care centre include general chats with patients, blood pressure checks and blood sugar readings.

GLENWOOD Presbyterian Church (GPC) has opened a care centre to service the congregation as well as the public.

Church minister, Brett Williams, said the GPC Care Centre opened in the Craig Memorial Hall in Evans Road on 3 June, explaining that the decision to start this venture was connected to the closure of the Glenumore Care Centre, which operated from the hall, in November 2017, after the Department of Health took a decision to no longer distribute medication to the clinic.

“As a church, the ladies felt they needed to do something for the community to help in some way, and Pam Richardson was instrumental in getting women together, the majority of which are retired nurses, to start up the care centre,” he said, adding that this had been very important for the older people in the congregation, and would benefit the community at large.

“It has been nice to work again and give back, and we want the community to know what we are doing, and to come through for health checks,” said Pam.

Services offered at the care centre include general chats with patients, blood pressure checks, blood sugar readings, followed by tea, coffee and eats and fellowship. All nurses working at the care centre are registered with the SA Nursing Council.

The care centre is open on two Mondays in the month, with the next opening on 7 October and 21 October from 9.30am to 11am. Brett said if the need grows, they would consider running the care centre more often.

“We are slowly getting off the ground and every week there are a couple more people attending, so it seems to be growing steadily,” said Pam.

There is no need to book, and the community is encouraged to attend next month. A car guard is on duty.
