Florida Road joins national #ComeIn movement

The Florida Road business community wanted to do something to show its support against violence.

THE Florida Road community is joining the national ‘Come In’ movement of restaurants and shops around South Africa to show support and solidarity for anyone who does not feel safe on the street.

Stores will display a #ComeIn sticker with the Florida Road logo. The initiative was founded by the Raptor Room restaurant in Cape Town, who posted the following statement on social media: “If you are ever walking in the street close to us and you feel unsafe, just come inside. You don’t need to buy anything. If you are here and you need to walk to your car alone, ask us to walk with you to make sure you are safe. If you are ever in our space and you don’t feel safe, please tell us.”

Leah Jasmine who lives, works and writes for the Florida Road social media pages, said: “The Florida Road business community wanted to do something to show our support against violence and particularly towards women. We are lucky, Florida Road is one of the most monitored and policed streets in Durban, but that doesn’t mean that people always feel safe and sometimes don’t always speak out.”

A 2018 UN study confirmed that the most dangerous place for a woman is her home and while South Africa didn’t make it into the Tompson Reuters study of top 10 most dangerous countries in the world to be a woman, the recent high profile murders in Cape Town have brought the issue of violence against women and children in South Africa to the national fore.

“A sticker won’t change the world, but this is about our Florida Road community doing something no matter how small, in supporting a collective movement to bring awareness around general safety and caring about the well-being of others,” said Jasmine.

As Raptor Room concludes: “There are no words left, only our actions that define us. Enough is enough.”
