Church hosts anniversary concert

The 170th anniversary of St Paul’s Church in Durban will be commemorated with a concert on 24 September.

ST Paul’s Anglican Church, located in the heart of the city of Durban, celebrates 170 years of existence this year, and to mark the occasion, a special concert will be held on Tuesday, 24 September (Heritage Day) at 11.30am.

Melvin Peters, who has been the music director for the past 15 years, has been instrumental in establishing and promoting the church as a concert venue. In keeping with the cultural diversity of the parish, the concert will feature a variety of music genres and musicians. The main performer is Tim Gunther, an organist and choirmaster from Bremen, Germany.

Tim Gunther will be visiting Durban under the auspices of the City Partnership that exists between Durban and Bremen. Tim is currently the music director at St Stephani Kulturkirche in Bremen, a venue dedicated primarily to the promotion of the arts. Last August, Peters was invited to perform in a special concert at this church, in honour of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela.

The concert on Heritage Day will also feature the St Paul’s Choir, as well as the Melvin Peters Quartet, comprising Jeff Robinson on sax and flute, Philani Ngidi on bass, Bruce Baker on drums and Peters on piano. The St Paul’s Choir will sing well known music by Bach, Mozart as well as a few contemporary composers, while the quartet will focus on jazz that emanates primarily from South Africa.

Tickets may be purchased at the door for R80, R50 for pensioners and R20 for children. Patrons may also contact the church office on 031 305 4666 for advance bookings. St Paul’s Anglican Church is located at 161 Monty Naicker Road, Durban, directly opposite the Workshop.
