Illegal firearm operations gain momentum

During the month of August a total of 205 illegal firearms and 1534 rounds of ammunition were seized during various operations.

RELENTLESS crime fighting initiatives by the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal continue to yield results in removing criminal elements from communities.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS, during the month of August a total of 205 illegal firearms and 1534 rounds of ammunition were seized during various operations. Police arrested 226 people who were found in illegal possession of firearms during the same period.

“The reduction in the number of illegal firearms in our communities will have a positive impact on the number of serious and violent crimes that are reported in the province. These firearms are used in inter-group conflicts, taxi violence, armed robberies and stock theft,” she said.

Mbele said in a bid to rid communities of illegal firearms, a group of dedicated police officers gathered information on a person who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

On Tuesday, 2 September, police proceeded to a flat in Wentworth where they arrested a suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco Pistol with the serial number erased, as well as four rounds of ammunition.

“Further investigations revealed that the firearm was reported stolen at the Durban Central Police Station. The suspect was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He appeared at the Durban Magistrate Court yesterday and was remanded into custody,” she said.

Mbele said the police applauded ordinary citizens that have contributed to the successes over the past month, by informing police of people who are in illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

“We once again appeal to the community to continue working with the police and share information with regards to illegal firearms in their neighbourhoods,” she said.
