Classes temporarily suspended at DUT

DUT students are calling for the dismissal of the current security service provider on campus.

CLASSES have been temporarily canceled at Durban University of Technology campuses while students call for bolstered security measures at the institution following the stabbing of student Sandile Ndlovu last Tuesday.

Ndlovu is reportedly still in a critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed in the head in a lecture room by an unknown suspect . Student political formations at DUT are calling for bolstered security measures at the institution and are demanding that the current security provider, Excellent be dismissed.

Speaking to The Berea Mail, Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command Secretary, Sandiso Buthelezi, says enough is enough ” The incompetent and unreliable security company must go. We are not safe and our security in the campuses is very weak. We have over the past months requested the introduction of card scanning machines and biometrics to be used as access at gates and residences, but this call has fallen on deaf ears. We want Excellent gone, we are not safe under their guard,” he said.

Earlier this year, campus security came under fire after a student, Mlungisi Mandonsela, was allegedly shot and killed by one of the university’s own contracted security officials. Since the incident which sparked widespread outrage and protests, students have called for the dismissal of the campus security provider. EFF Student Command chairperson Buntu Faku, insisted that they would continue to keep the university closed until there were positive resolutions to the students’ demands.

DUT spokesperson Alan Khan said the university management had on Friday resolved to temporarily suspend the academic programme in Durban, but that residences would remain open.

A full Student Political Formation Council is expected to meet today, Monday 16 September to discuss the issue and try find amicable solutions to the concerns brought forward by students after which a proposal will be presented to the university’s Executive Committee of Senate by Student Political Organisations.
