Police catch armed robber in the act

The armed suspects locked the business owner in the toilet before stealing cash and a cellphone.

A 25-year-old robbery suspect will appear at the Durban Magistrates Court today on charges of robbery as well as  possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to provincial police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, at around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon two men entered a cafe in Samora Machel Street and threatened the 42-year-old owner with a firearm.

The men instructed the man not to make any noise and then proceeded to lock him up inside a toilet.

The two suspects then removed an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone.

Police, in the meantime, received an alert of a robbery in progress and rushed to the scene where they managed to catch one of the suspects int he act.

Police found a 9mm pistol and cellphone on the man and arrested him. He was charged with robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
