Ndlovu, who suffered severe head injuries in the assault, is on life support in ICU and currently fighting for his life.

Speaking to The Berea Mail, family spokesperson Tshepo Mokoena said the family was looking for answers but that nothing was forthcoming from the Institution.

He said the perpetrator was still at large and a case of attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances had been lodged at the Berea Police station.

Commenting on the tragic event, the University’s Senior Director: Corporate Affairs Alan Khan confirmed the incident which took place on Monday evening and said police were investigating.  Khan said Ndlovu had been transported to hosptial via ambulance.

He said Ndlovu’s family was informed of the incident and arrangements have been made to assist them.

“Members of Mr Ndlovu’s family travelled from White River in Mpumalanga to Durban and the University is supporting the family. Dr Isaac Machi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, People and Operations, together with the Dean of Students, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane and members of the Student Services Department, met with family representatives on Tuesday,” he said.

“This criminal and violent attack against Mr Ndlovu happened inside a lecture venue on campus and unfortunately, the University does not have security guards stationed inside each lecture venue.   The University is assisting the South African Police Services with their ongoing investigation into the attack that resulted in Mr Ndlovu’s hospitalisation. The Student Services Department remains in daily contact with Mr Ndlovu’s family and the entire University community is praying for Sandile during this challenging time.
