Ambassador commended for honesty

"We work for the community and need to look after them." - Nkosi Mkhonza

BULWER Ambassador, Nkosingiphile Mkhonza, has been commended for his honesty after he recovered a cellphone belonging to a shopper on Sunday.

Nkosi said he had seen a woman standing outside Woolworths in Helen Joseph Road waiting for a taxi, and later found her cellphone lying on the ground by the trolley bay where she had been standing.

“I had seen the woman, and after she had left, I went to fetch a trolley for a customer and noticed the phone lying on the ground. We have been trained by ‘mom’ Heather (Heather Rorick) to hand in any items we find as we work for the community and need to look after them. I contacted Heather to give her the phone, and to make means to get it back to the owner,” he said.

Rorick, the brainchild of the Bulwer Community Improvement Project, under which the Bulwer Ambassadors fall, said from the start of the project she had trained the men to be honest and have integrity.

“I put it out on our groups to say a phone had been found outside Woolworths, and the woman phoned me on the phone, saying someone had told her it had been found. She met me at Woolworths to get the phone back and gave Nkosi something to say thank you. She was shocked that he had been honest enough to hand it in. I told the men from the beginning rather to be honest and get a reward, than to steal and get a criminal record. It is all about integrity, and this has made this campaign work, and has given us a good support system,” said Heather.

She said a resident had also seen the post about the returned phone and had phoned her to commend Nkosi, and had also given him a reward for his honesty. Heather said there were many comments on the Bulwer Safety and Urban Regeneration Forum group saying what a wonderful team of men the Ambassadors are.
