African Art Centre reaches out

Running art competitions, workshops and up-cycling initiatives are a few of the projects the African Art Centre is aiming to start with local schools.

NEWLY relocated to the Phansi Museum in Glenwood, the African Art Centre has a number of projects planned within the community.

Commenting on the move, Claudia Krumhoff, board member of the African Art Centre, said that as stressful as moving can be, it also gives space for new opportunities. The African Art Centre hosted a tea morning this month to launch its new outreach and social responsibility programme for neighbouring schools. “We would love to establish new and cultivate old relationships and connections with the African Art Centre,” she said.

Claudia said the African Art Centre was keen to run outreach and social responsibility initiatives that suit the schools’ timetables, and fulfil the Centre’s mandate in reaching out.

“We are very aware of how difficult it is for some pupils to find the right initiative to make a meaningful contribution during their outreach service. Therefore, we would like to offer the pupils of our partnering schools an alternative that they would love doing as its something close to their hearts and at the same time making a profound contribution to our society,” Krumhoff said.

Gloria Mbhele, outreach coordinator at the Centre, explained a few possibilities for how the schools could participate. She is able to offer individual programmes for schools and specific grades to fit in with an already busy school curriculum. Running art competitions, workshops and progressive up-cycling initiatives are a few of the suggested projects.

“The Centre is very excited to start the process of working together with Clifton Preparatory School, Durban Girls’ High School and Maris Stella,” she said.
