Sea Sunday a success

It is very appropriate to honour seafarers, says Yvonne De Kock from the Sailors' Society SA.

THE International Sea Sunday was celebrated at the Cruiseliner Terminal in the Port of Durban recently.

Yvonne de Kock, public relations co-ordinator for the Sailors’ Society SA said these days the threats of piracy have added to making sea-faring a dangerous profession and we depend on those responsible for bringing ships to the ports of the world for trade and providing so many everyday needs, from fish to furniture, from clothing to cars.

“It is therefore very appropriate to honour seafarers,” she said.

Rev Boet van Schalkwyk welcomed Councillor Mpume Sithole who represented the Mayor’s Office for the second year in succession and brought a greeting from the eThekwini Municipality. She expressed her pleasure at attending again.

Organised by the Port Chaplains, each year a representative from one of the Missions is the preacher. This year was the turn of Biblia with Rev Marius Schoombie of the NG Church, South Coast congregation who delivered an insightful and thought-provoking sermon.

Captain Allen Pembroke, former SA Navy officer, undertook an important aspect of the service which is the Blessing of the port and all who serve there, along with prayers for seafarers and their families.

“It was encouraging to have a large number of Sea Scouts and Sea Cadets attending. The SA Army Band in their inimitable way once again provided their rousing music which made the singing of the hymns all that more enjoyable. Apart from their accompaniment, the band’s programme of music is a recital in itself,” said Yvonne.

After the service the large congregation enjoyed refreshments and time together.
