School breaks blood donation record

205 units of blood were collected by 13 staff and learners at the Glenwood High School.

GLENWOOD High School has broken another record! The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently congratulated the school for its record-breaking number of units of blood collected in one day by a school nationally.

A whopping 205 units of blood were collected from 13 staff and learners as part of the school’s Mandela Day initiative. Staff and leaarners received a trophy earlier this year for donating the most blood – 493 pints in total – for a school in the provinc. The school has supported SANBS over the past five years. Mohamed Goolam from SANBS thanked the school for its dedication in supplying life-giving blood for those in need. He said the service relied 70 per cent on schools for its supply of blood.

Project co-ordinator at Glenwood High School, Divesh Sookdeo, said as an old boy of the school as well as a staff member, he was very proud of the school’s achievement.

“When I was at school there wasn’t such a big drive to donate blood, but now I am proud of how the boys support the service. The target on the day was 110 units, and I knew we would be able to surpass it!” he said.

Mohamed and Phumzile Zulu from SANBS visited the school on Friday to hand out raffle gift hampers to four learners.
