Don’t let your cellphone distract you, warn police

Durban Central SAPS urge the public to be vigilant when shopping and when stopped at traffic lights.

DURBAN Central police are making the community aware of a number of reported cases of theft which have occurred inside shops and while motorists are in their stationary vehicles.

According to Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS, it is alleged that victims are being targeted when they are shopping, and their cellphones are being stolen from their bags. “Victims will notice at a later stage that their bags were opened without them noticing,” said Khomo.

She said in other incidences, common robberies are occurring when motorists are stationary at traffic lights.

“Motorists are urged to be alert when stationary at robots. They are being approached when they are busy on their phones with their windows wound down. Suspects are targeting cellphones and laptops,” said Khomo.

Khomo said in some cases, vehicles are hijacked while the driver is distracted checking his cellphone.

“Motorists are advised only to check their cellphones when it is safe to do so,” she said.
