Zandile Gumede buckles to ANC’s decision

Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte told the media on Tuesday that no disciplinary action would be taken against Gumede.

ZANDILE Gumede’s fate has been decided.

The ANC announced yesterday afternoon that Gumede had accepted the decision by national officials to recall her and will continue to serve as a Councillor and assist in uniting council and the ANC.

The decision comes after Gumede’s shock withdrawal of her letter of resignation as mayor last week, just days after agreeing to resign as instructed by the governing party.

Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte told the media on Tuesday that the party’s national officials had confirmed the decision to remove the embattled mayor and her executive committee colleagues from their leadership posts.

Gumede had approached Luthuli House last week after withdrawing her letter of resignation asking for the provincial committee’s decision to recall her and other EXCO deployees on the grounds of poor performance, to be revoked.

This led to a meeting of the ANC’s Provincial executive committee and national office bearers at Luthuli House where it was eventually agreed to support the decision by the PEC and recall Gumede and her colleagues.

Duarte said there would be no disciplinary action taken against Gumede for challenging the decision of the PEC. She said Gumede had explained her reasons and had acted out of anxiety. Gumede and her fellow ANC Councillors met with the PEC before the media briefing where they accepted the decision.

Public Safety and Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda, former finance MEC Belinda Scott and Weziwe Thusi, will take up the posts of eThekwini Mayor, Deputy-Mayor and Speaker and will be sworn in at a full council meeting on Thursday.

Duarte further reiterated that the party would now focus on ensuring good governance in eThekwini.
