Police constable nabbed for corruption

The officer was detained at the Durban Central police station and will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court.

AN intelligence driven operation conducted by police officers on 20 August led to the arrest of a 30-year-old policeman in the Durban CBD.

It is alleged that on 19 August a man crashed his vehicle and the police officer assisting him failed to open a case.

“The officer towed the vehicle and requested the vehicle owner pay him R7 000 in cash to release his vehicle. An operation was conducted immediately after this was brought to the attention of police and led to the arrest of the police officer who will be charged for corruption,” said Col Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS.

The officer was detained at the Durban Central police station and will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court.

Mbele said two cellphones as well as cash that was handed over to him were seized by police.

“The community is commended for bringing such corrupt practices to the attention of police so that such individuals can be brought to book. There is no place in the SAPS for corrupt police officers,” commented Mbele.
