Red lines keep patrons away

‘No parking' lines have been installed on the length of Esther Roberts Road outside businesses and well-known restaurants.

‘NO parking’ lines painted along Esther Roberts Road and around an island in Deodar Road, Umbilo, have negatively impacted on businesses in the area leaving customers no space to park.

Berea Mail received a number of complaints from locals saying the lines which have been painted along the length of Esther Roberts Road outside businesses and well-known restaurants to the intersection of Esther Roberts and Deodar Roads, and around the island in the road, have left patrons frequenting the businesses in a quandry with no place to safely park their vehicles. Customers who continue to park along the red line are liable to be fined.

Mla Ndlovu, assistant manager at Glenwood Bakery, said staff had noticed the municipal workers painting the lines on the road a few months ago, and had approached the workers and questioned them.

“We were told to contact the municipality, however we weren’t able to speak to anyone who knew about the issue. Our customers have complained that there is now not enough parking,” he said.

Sheri Govender from Bakers DIY said she had received a lot of complaints from customers.

“Staff at businesses in the road park in the road where there are no red lines, which forces customers to park farther down the road and walk back up,” she said.

Vehicles are still parking over ‘no parking’ lines due to a lack of parking outside businesses in Esther Roberts Road.

Lara Gentles from the restaurant Parc said the lines were painted on a Monday when the business was closed.

“When we saw what had been done, we contacted the municipality to complain about this, but have had no joy. We have lost quite a lot of business and have had complaints. Some of the customers have been fined for parking over the no parking lines. We feel some space should have been left for customer parking,” she said.

Responding to queries by Berea Mail, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela, said: “There appears to be an excess of no stopping restrictions in this vicinity. However, arrangements have been made for this to be remedied.”
