SAPS secures 39 convictions on sexual related cases

The accused were convicted for rape, murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, child pornography, child abandonment and robbery.

INVESTIGATIONS by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal have yielded positive results.

During July, units secured a number of convictions for crimes directed against women and children.

“The units will continue to intensify their investigations during Women’s Month,” said Lt Col Thulani Zwane from provincial SAPS.

“The teams of investigators throughout the province managed to secure 39 convictions during this period while other cases remain under investigation and some are still pending at various courts. A total of 265 suspects were arrested for sexual related cases. Three of the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment for rape whilst others were sentenced to a total of 466 years imprisonment,” he said.

These accused were convicted for various crimes including rape, murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, child pornography, child abandonment and robbery.
