City warns residents not to use water from Inanda Dam

A large spillage of caustic soda has worked its way into the dam and residents in surrounding areas are urged not to use the water until the spillage is cleared.

ETEHKWINI Municipality has cautioned residents not to use water from Inanda Dam following reports of a large spill of Caustic Soda from the Msundusi River has worked its way downstream into the dam.

In a media statement on Friday afternoon, the city spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, advised that caustic soda is a very alkaline material and therefore corrosive. Residents upstream of the dam and in the dam surroundings are advised not to expose themselves to the water in the river nor should they allow livestock to drink such water until further notice.

Residents will be advised when the spill has been contained.
