Collaboration creates recycled art

The children at Eden are excited to see what is possible when using recycled materials.

A COLLABORATION between learners at Eden College and Umcebo Design has created a striking piece of art, the Eden Tree, which has been put on display on one of the buildings at the school.

The project came about after the school approached Robin Opperman from Umcebo Design to help create a large piece of work, with the aim to train the learners to collect and recycle.

“We are trying to present an alternative image of recycling, to show how people are using items to make a difference. We work with organisations and schools on these projects. We can only do this with schools like Eden who are dedicated to creating and completing the work,” he said.

Learners from Grade 3 to Grade 7 produced a panel for the project which took three weeks to complete. Robin and Ujala Sewpersad from Umcebo assembled each of the panels to create the finished product which was installed on a wall at the school. Greta Peens, Prep principal at Eden, said this would be an ongoing initiative and she aimed to fill the wall with recycled works of art.

“The children are so excited to see what is possible when using recycled materials, and to see the end result,” said Robin.
