Resident angered by police inaction

Gregory Simpson said he called Umbilo SAPS and 10111 in vain following robberies at his place of residence.

AN angry Umbilo resident has criticised Umbilo police for not responding after he reported that money had been stolen from his home.

Gregory Simpson said he arrived home from work at 4.45pm on Saturday, 27 July to find his room had been broken into and money he had been collecting and getting ready to bank had been stolen.

“I noticed something was wrong, and when I looked, I saw my bottle of R5 and R1 coins had been stolen. Only the bottle of R2 coins remained as I had hidden them,” he said, adding that R190 worth of coins had been stolen from his room a month ago, as he had left it unlocked, trusting the people he stayed with.

He said he immediately called the Umbilo police to report the theft and was told there was only one vehicle on duty and they were standing off at an accident.
“I called Umbilo SAPS and 10111 until 7.50pm and at 10pm I was still waiting for the police to arrive,” he said.

On Sunday, 4 August, Simpson arrived home to find his door had been tampered with and he discovered he had once again been robbed. He said he called Umbilo SAPS and 10111 in vain.

“The response is there is no manpower and no vehicles. How is this possible? There are a whole lot of vehicles parked at the station. If they are broken, they should be fixed. Do the police want me to take this into my own hands? If I do, I will be arrested,” he said.

Responding to queries from Berea Mail, Umbilo SAPS communications officer, Capt Pumzile Makaula, said she wasn’t aware of the case.
“I will contact the complainant and investigate,” she said.
