Open trenches on pavement a concern

"My concern is that the pavement has not been reinstated or tarred and with the elderly who have walkers and wheelchairs or are unsteady on their feet, these are dangerous conditions."

COUNCLLOR Mmabatho Tembe bemoaned the poor workmanship, work stoppages and general lack of communication between municipal departments after visiting a site outside the old age home in Deodar Road, Umbilo this week.

Tembe said open trenches and unfinished work had been evident along the pavements in the road for months, with the issue first being brought to her attention in November 2018.

“Work was being done on the pavements outside Mothwa Haven. There had been work stoppages which have apparently been resolved by the municipality. My concern is that the pavement has not been reinstated or tarred and with the elderly living in the old age home, who have walkers and wheelchairs or are unsteady on their feet, these are dangerous conditions,” she said, adding that she had escalated this issue to the manager of Engineering for urgent attention.

Tembe said there were a lot of issues in the community where unfinished work, pot holes and the general state of the roads were of concern.

“In general roadworks are taking a long time to be completed, for example work in Che Guevara Road. This has finally been tarred, although work is still incomplete in places and workmanship is poor. Departments need to work together to ensure work is completed quickly,” she said.
