Authors form KZN writers’ guild

Authors are calling on other local writers to join them in making a difference in the community.

FOUR local authors and a co-ordinator, who recently formed the KZN New Age Authors Guild, are calling on other writers in the community to join them to strive towards social cohesion through reading and writing.

The guild, made up of authors Xolani Radebe, Yolanda Armien, Mbali Memela and Khonzinkosi Memela, and assisted by co-ordinator Wandile Ntinganti, held their first book fair at Queensmead Spar on 16 July. As this was a resounding success, they are now calling on others to join them in this movement.

“Building on the success of our first platform, we are now asking for buy in from business, the tourism sector and individuals for sponsorship and promotion of this initiative, and aim to target schools where we can encourage the next generation. These children need rolemodels and guidance. We will also be approaching malls where we can host book fairs and dance, music and poetry events,” said Yolanda.

Wandile said the movement showed that people don’t have to wait on government to make a chang

“We are aiming to create jobs for the new generation of authors, to encourage publishers to help, and we are looking for authors who will join us to work together. We are also looking for creatives who are involved in dance, music and art, anyone who is looking to showcase their skills is welcome to join us to work in unity to enlighten and expose the youth to opportunities,” he said.

They said the initiative is mainly about social cohesion and getting South Africa to read.

“A book exists in all of us. Our bigger picture is in uniting KZN authors to unify to co-create new authors and authors to unify as one rainbow nation. The guild collaborates with eThekwini Libraries to help encourage people to read and we hope to transform ignorance into literacy through reading and writing. We owe our youth new knowledge and wisdom of the old for they are our link to the future,” said Yolanda.
