THE Democratic Alliance (DA) tabled a Motion in the Provincial Parliament on 17 July, calling on all parties to support the deployment of the anti-gang units to parts of eThekwini.
The move comes after numerous calls from residents living in Sydenham, Wentworth, Austerville, Newlands, Mariannridge and other suburbs who are currently suffering under the violence of gangs and organised crime.

Speaking on behalf of the DA, Councillor Chris Pappas said: “Communities have become victims of gang violence, turf wars and drug-related organised crime, and little has been done to stop this. The DA condemns gang violence, drug abuse and the breakdown of communities due to the inadequate response by government.”
He said the DA has now called on government to deploy the specialised anti-gang units to ‘hotspot’ areas in the city before the situation becomes irreversible and the army has to be called in.
“Instead of waiting until it is too late – and then using gang violence and crime for political gain – the ANC must intervene,” said Pappas.
