All that glitters is gold

The eLAN Gold Cup is guaranteed to be a most prestigious day of thoroughbred horse racing.

WITH horse racing fever at an all-time high, and the Durban July still fresh in our minds, the eLAN Gold Cup, a grand and golden finale to the Champion’s Season, takes place at Greyville Racecourse on 27 July.

One of the greatest Gold Cup riders of all time was Charlie Barends, who won the event seven times. He partnered favourite Chez Monty, who in 1950 became the first horse to win the race two years running. Felix Coetzee broke Barends’ long-standing record in 2012, when he won his eighth Gold Cup on In Writing.

First run in 1921 for a stake of just £2000, the Gold Cup is Africa’s premier marathon for long-distance runners. The race is run over 3200m and starts at the 400m mark in the short Greyville straight.

The 12-race meeting boasts no fewer than four Grade 1 events including the R1-million World Sports Betting Champions Cup over 1 800m and the top weight-for-age speed event, the R1-million Mercury Sprint over 1 200m.

The other two Grade 1 events are the R750 000 Premiers’ Champion Stakes and the R750 000 Thekwini Stakes, the final clashes over 1600m for the country’s top two-year-olds.

The Grade 2 Gold Bracelet is for fillies and mares at weight-for-age with penalties while the Umkhomazi Stakes and The Debutante are Grade 3 races at set weights over 1 200m for the juveniles.

eLAN is hosting a premium cocktail-style event in the Champions’ Room for the duration of this fantastic day of racing – the highest graded race day in KZN. Twelve feature races are run during the Festival of Racing, with winnings amounting to over R5 million, including the R1.25 million eLAN Gold Cup.

Top class catering, private tote betting facilities, a business exhibition and private bathrooms are all included at only R495 per person, and also includes a welcome drink, entertainment and hosting, and a full day’s catering. Corporates are encouraged to book tables of 10 to spoil their clients and staff.
