Park project in full swing

The project aims to address beautification and urban improvement issues in the area between Berriedale Road and Seaforth Avenue, and includes Oakleigh Park.

FOLLOWING a short delay, the urban improvement project started at Oakleigh Park earlier this year is now in full swing. The project aims to address beautification and urban improvement issues in the area between Berriedale Road and Seaforth Avenue, and includes the park on Oakleigh Drive, Berea.

Former councillor Chris Pappas, who initiated the project, said the aim was to instil a sense of community pride in the area and provide a platform for the community to take ownership of the area. It also has an important secondary function, to support a local cooperative and generate employment.

“We are very fortunate that there has been buy-in from so many people. We have received pledges for financial contributions as well as in kind donations towards the project. The most important contribution is that of the people who have freely given of their time to help and manage the initiative,” said Pappas.

He warned residents to be aware of scammers and urged those interested in the project to contact Gywnn Smith or himself for more information.

“There are people out there who are making money out of crime and other community issues. This is purely a not-for-profit initiative driven by the community and accountable to the community.”

The project was presented to community members after a meeting held in Oakleigh Park in March this year. The meeting was also attended by Metro Police and the Parks Department who pledged their support. The project will soon reveal its logo and name, which are being designed locally and will be embroidered on workwear that has been donated.
