Durban businesses hit by spate of armed robberies

Andreas Mathios advised business owners to install CCTV surveillance cameras in strategic positions on their business premises.

ARMED robbers targeted several businesses at the weekend, where they tied up security guards and fled with valuables.

Blue Security’s Andreas Mathios said a gang of five armed robbers held up a security guard at a business premises in the Durban CBD at around 6.16am on Saturday.

“Two of the suspects tied up a security guard who was working on the premises and forced him to stand in a dark corner on the property, while the rest of the gang loaded goods into their getaway vehicle,” he said. Mathios said no injuries were reported during the incident.

In a second armed robbery in Berea on Saturday, armed robbers held up a security guard at gunpoint and broke into the premises. The incident occurred at around 6.43pm.

“A gang of five armed suspects held up the security guard and then forced open the main entrance of the building. They loaded computers into their getaway vehicle, white Toyota Etios, and fled the scene. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said. Mayville SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

Mathios said armed suspects also robbed a business premises in Bellair on Sunday at around 1pm.

“A gang of three armed suspects entered the premises from the back and then held up the cashier at gunpoint and fled the scene with a large sum of cash. No injuries were reported.”

Cato Manor SAPS attended the scene.
