Man arrested in Morningside teacher’s murder

"A 29-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the murder."

A 29-year-old man has been arrested, in connection with the murder of Clarence Primary School teacher, Devashnee Doorasamy, 30, who was found by police in her 9th Avenue flat in Morningside on Friday.

According to reports, the suspect was known by the deceased.

It was also reported that Doorasamy died on Monday last week.

In 2017, Doorasamy stepped into the public eye when she married her husband, Megan Doorasamy on the popular reality show Married in a Flash.

In the show, couples who have been in a long-term relationship or engaged are given three days and a budget of R75 000 to creatively plan and execute their wedding.

SAPS spokesman Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that a case of murder had been opened at the Berea police station.

“A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested and appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court on 8 July,” said Colonel Mbele, who was unable to confirm if the man had been granted bail.

Meanwhile, friends and family of the young teacher have turned to social media to express their sadness.

“I’m so shocked, this is someone I knew. Rest Peacefully. May God strengthen your family at such a terrible time,” said Tasneem Latiff Ally.

“My daughter goes to Clerence Primary and she came home so devastated yesterday after they received the news of her passing during the holiday. So sad indeed, I knew her and had spoken to her a couple of times at school. Condolences to the family and the school family as well,” said Anele Pollet.

Doorasamy’s funeral was held on Wednesday.
