WITH just hours to go before Durban hosts it’s premier calendar event at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, has issued a stern warning to all road users to respect traffic rules of face jail time as locals and visitors flock to the city for the spectacular Vodacom Durban July.

The Department of Transport has already developed an integrated plan targeting strategic spots ahead of the horse racing and fashion extravaganza.
The plan will see the province adopting a zero-tolerance approach to all road users.
A number of multi-disciplinary and over-night operations have been planned and more personnel will be deployed over the busy weekend.
Their deployment of police and traffic personnel is to ensure tight security measures around the July event and beyond.

Kaunda said traffic enforcement had arrested 161 motorists for traffic violations in the month of June 2019.
Out of those, 71 were arrested for drinking and driving. Commenting on the traffic and security plan for the weekend, Kaunda called on all road users to adhere to traffic rules or faced the music.
“The statistics from last month are an indication that we have taken a very tough stance against drinking and driving on our roads. Our teams have been deployed throughout the province to ensure that this weekend is safe and incident free. Those who will be caught will spend the Durban July weekend in police cells. The directive is very clear to traffic officers – have no mercy for people who are violating the law. As the province, we are very serious about saving lives of innocent people and we will continue with our radical approach against errant motorists,” said Kaunda.
He went on to assure the people of KwaZulu-Natal and visitors of their safety, saying that all security agencies have been brought on board to ensure that the event is safe and incident free.
