Child eye health a big winner

THE Brien Holden Vision Institute won funds through the MySchool 21 years of Giving Back campaign.

THE Brien Holden Vision Institute in Umbilo, which works to foster universal eye care for children, is one of the winners in the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet ‘21 years of Giving Back’ campaign.

In celebration of its 21st anniversary last year, the community loyalty programme launched the ‘21 years of Giving Back’ campaign with R2.1 million to give away to 21 causes. Supporters were invited to nominate any South African charitable organisation or school that mattered to them, even if they were not yet beneficiaries of the programme. This enabled 21 charities and schools across the country to each win a cash donation of R100 000 to boost their good work in their communities.

The Brien Holden Vision Institute was nominated to participate in the campaign by a MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet cardholder who received a R1 000 Woolworths Giftcard for putting forward one of the 21 winners.

Lack of access to basic eye healthcare severely compromises a schoolchild’s ability to learn. Thanks to the R100 000 donation, the Brien Holden Vision Institute will be able to provide much-needed spectacles to an additional 625 school children in under-served communities this year.
