Sherwood home for the blind in dire need

The home relies on donors and a small income, and there is a need for basic maintenance projects to be undertaken at the premises as well as other donations.

INDIVIDUALS and businesses in the community are encouraged to assist the John Palmer Residence for the Blind in Sherwood with donations or manpower.

According to the home’s manager, Nelly Magutshwa regular donors of bread, fresh vegetables and meat, as well as kitchen cutlery and crockery, linen, bedding and cupboards, to replace old items at the home are needed.

Volunteer, Shelley Lawson, said the home relies on donors and a small income. She said there was a need for basic maintenance projects to be undertaken at the premises such as painting, gardening, retarring of the driveway, electrical work and plumbing. The home is also in need of more visible signage.

“We are encouraging garden lovers, garden groups, school groups and work groups to come through and get involved in beautifying the grounds as a project as well as doing some maintenance work. We are also in need of someone who can assist in leveling the front lawn, which is very uneven. We also ask if groups can visit and spend time with the residents. Bring tea and cake and chat to them, or take them shopping. We are also looking for a retired nursing sister who could come in on a voluntary basis to do checkups,” she said.

She said so far the Durban Host Lions Club had volunteered to help with a vegetable garden project at the property and money for a new security hut had been donated by Build It, and erected by GR Cabins.

Shelley and her husband Richard, local preachers, hold a church service at the home on Sundays, and have volunteered there for 15 years. “If people want to help by choosing and donating items from a wish list, we will gladly supply one,” said Shelley.
