Medic completes bunker challenge

Mark Basson took on a 21km run in firefighter bunker gear to raise funds for Horizon Farm Trust.

DURBAN medic, Mark Basson, triumphed in his ‘Reaching Horizons 21km Bunker Challenge’ at the South African Medical Association 21km race in Durban on Sunday.

Mark tackled the run in firefighter bunker gear to raise funds for Horizon Farm Trust, a residential home for special needs, intellectually impaired, disabled adults. So far, he has raised around R5 000 and is hoping to raise more.

Speaking about the challenge, Mark said the run itself was tough.

“It was a beautiful day for the run so I am thankful to the weather gods for that. It is extremely slow going with all the gear on, which after about 15km started to take its toll on my body. The last 3km were extremely painful and slowed my pace down to a walk. I was at that stage walking 100m then running 100m,” he said.

Mark was aiming to finish in just under three hours, but said with the strain of the last 3km only managed a time of 3h15m.

“I am a little disappointed, but I must say I would not have made it were it not for my running companions, my wife Carla and friend Gareth Vermaak,” he said.
