Cats of Durban unveils mobile sterilisation clinic

This clinic is a vital tool to enable Cats of Durban to achieve its goal of reducing the number of stray cats in Durban and surrounds.

CATS of Durban, a volunteer-based feral feline sterilisation organisation, has unveiled a mobile sterilisation clinic that can be deployed across KZN.

This clinic is a vital tool to enable Cats of Durban to achieve its goal of reducing the number of stray cats in Durban and surrounds, and across the province, in a humane and sustainable way.

Niki Moore from Cats of Durban, said outside of KZN’s larger towns and cities there are few small-animal veterinary clinics, yet people in rural areas and small towns still own pets and ‘adopt’ strays.

“Because of the lack of veterinary services, these pets lack skilled care and, especially, sterilisation. The result is an overpopulation of homeless animals, some of which can develop chronic, untreated, conditions. Even worse, unwanted animals endure exceptional cruelty and abuse. Even though the clinic is primarily concerned with cat sterilisations, the vet is qualified to deal with all small animals, and can treat a variety of conditions and ailments,” she said.

The mobile vet has a standing arrangement with Cats of Durban but any animal welfare group anywhere in the province can request the services of the vet. They would need to be prepared to host the clinic and do the necessary preparation and logistical work required.

If any welfare organisation or group would like to use the services of a fully-equipped and experienced mobile vet in areas where veterinary services are lacking, for the treatment and sterilisation of stray animals, contact Cats of Durban at codspayclinic@gmail.com.
