Nkululeko brings home the title

Nkululeko Mbatha said he was grateful for the support he had received in his quest to be the next King of South Africa.

MORNINGSIDE’S Nkululeko Mbatha walked off with the winning crown at the final of the Mr International pageant on Sunday, 16 June at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg.

Speaking about the event, Nkululeko said he had been nervous the entire week before the pageant. “They say nerves are good because they push you to strive to do better,” he said.

“The coronation day started off quite well because I told myself that I wanted to have fun and engage with the others, as I might not see some of them after the competition. I chose to rather stay true to myself and adjust a few things to give a good impression. I wanted to deliver a chilled performance but one that would make me stand out or be one of the best,” he said.

Making the first cut to the top six was the greatest achievement as Nkululeko said all the other entrants were deserving.

“After the Q&A session I convinced myself that I would place as a runner up, but not the winner,” he laughed.

Nkululeko said it was nervewracking waiting to hear who the winner was, and was shocked when his name was announced.

“Many things went through my head, things like, am I even ready to be Mister International SA 2019? Why me? Literally my life took a detour in just a minute!” he said.

Nkululeko said he was grateful for the support he had received and thanked the King and Queen of SA organisation, judges and sponsors for seeing the potential in him.

“I cannot wait to represent South Africa at the next Mister International contest in February,” he said.

Nkululeko took home an all-expenses paid trip to the Philippines and year-long sponsorships from different providers.
