Knitting up a storm

This year the Denis Hurley Centre in Durban is co-ordinating the KZN side of Winterhoop.

INDUSTRIOUS members of the Sew Gracefully women’s’ guild at Sparks Estate Methodist Church in Sydenham, have been busy knitting scarves for the Winterhoop national campaign, which is designed to gather donations for the less fortunate to help them through a potentially cold winter.

The women – who meet in the church hall weekly for communal sewing and knitting sessions – are gifting their handiwork to the Musgrave Methodist Church which is one of the 28 drop-off churches in and around Durban active in the campaign. The intention is for Musgrave Methodist to distribute the winter goods to drop-in patients at the church’s volunteer-run Kathleen Voysey Clinic which caters for the health care needs of the homeless and impoverished community.

This year the Denis Hurley Centre in Durban is co-ordinating the KZN side of Winterhoop. “We are excited to take on the position and are even more gratified to see ecumenical collaboration between many Christian churches of different traditions, who are working together to serve the less fortunate,” said DHC’s Director Raymond Perrier.

Donations can be dropped off during office hours at the church office before the end of June.

Donations of clean and good quality warm clothing and shoes, thermal underwear and socks, beanies, gloves and scarves, blankets and non-perishable food items are all deeply appreciated.
