Carjacking suspect arrested after shoot-out

The arrested suspect is due to appear in court soon on charges of carjacking, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

A SHOOT-OUT between suspected carjackers and police resulted in the arrest of a 31-year-old suspect last week.

Police together with other law enforcement agencies acted on information regarding a vehicle taken during a carjacking in Durban central.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele, police officers spotted the vehicle travelling along Imbovu Road in Welbedacht East which was being followed by another vehicle.

“The suspects detected the police approaching and a shoot-out ensued. One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was taken to hospital where he is under police guard. The other suspects fled into the dense bush and are still being sought by police,” she said.

Mbele said the vehicle, which was taken during the carjacking in Durban central, was recovered. Police seized the second vehicle believed to be used in the commission of the crime. Two police vehicles were damaged during the shootout. “The arrested suspect is due to appear in court soon on charges of carjacking, attempted murder and malicious damage to property,” said Mbele.
