DUT moves students after residence blaze

It is suspected that the blaze, which broke out on the 13th floor near a lift shaft was triggered by an electrical fault.

MORE than 300 students had to be moved to another Durban University of Technology residence after a fire broke out at one of its off-campus residences in the Renaissance building at the corner of St George’s and Gray Streets in the CBD earlier this week.

Many of the students evacuated from the burning building were treated for smoke inhalation.

DUT’s spokesman, Alan Khan said a number of students had already gone home for the Winter holidays so the building was not at its full capacity.

He said the institute was relieved no one was hurt in the fire.

It is suspected that the blaze, which broke out on the 13th floor near a lift shaft was triggered by an electrical fault.

The fire spread down the building to the second floor and students had to be evacuated.

Khan confirmed that the fire had caused damage to the building but said they would wait for the results of an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and what could be done in future to prevent similar occurrences.
