Hawks investigate more eThekwini councillors

The Hawks are alleged to be preparing to swoop on a number of eThekwini councillors in a case of fraud and corruption.

MEDIA reports indicate that the Hawks are set to move on 62 eThekwini councillors who allegedly benefited from tender fraud relating to a Durban Solid Waste contact in which eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede, councillor Mondli Mthembu and contractor Craig Ponnan are implicated.

The three appeared in the Durban Regional Commercial Crimes Court this month where they faced corruption charges related to the R208m DSW tender. They were granted bail of R50 000 each.

Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipality has assured residents that the mayor’s arrest would not negatively impact on service delivery in the Metro and that the municipality would function as normal.

The DA and IFP along with other civic society groups have called for the mayor to step down.
