Durban police warn motorists to be vigilant

Durban Central SAPS has reported a new modus operandi for theft from motorists.

DURBAN Central police issued a warning to motorists to be aware of the latest modus operandi of thieves who are targetting vehicles at traffic lights.

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central communications said the motorists are targeted when driving with their vehicle windows open.

“When vehicles are stationary at the traffic light the drivers are approached by criminals and they are told that their tyres are flat. While the driver is checking the flat tyre, the criminals use that time to rob drivers,” she said.

Khomo said cellphones have been stolen in reported cases.

“We urge drivers to be alert when approaching traffic lights and to keep their windows closed. Do not expose valuables such as laptops and bags on seats,” she said.
